Check Yo Ponytail is an open-genre, multimedia-drive events series started in Los Angeles, CA in 2006 by IHEARTCOMIX. With an emphasis on curation, CYP has premiered some of today’s top performers with a few tried and true legacy acts in between. While the line-ups have always been an integral part of the CYP experience, it’s the extended CYP universe that makes the events “More Than A Show”; complete with live animated visuals, original illustrations, exclusive mixtapes & music, professional photography & video coverage and comprehensive media campaigns that create an experience like none other. With praise from outlets such as Pitchfork, The FADER, Rolling Stone, SPIN, Nylon and more, CYP is one of a kind, even extending it’s brand to become a tour, a merch line and a TV show.
Originally started in 2006 at Safari Sam’s as weekly party as a collaboration between IHEARTCOMIX, Love Yourself and White Trash Charms, Check Yo Ponytail quickly outgrew those confines and within the first year moved to the newly opened Echoplex as The New Check Yo Ponytail. By mid 2008, with the duties of the IHEARTCOMIX record label taking precedence at the time, IHC founder, Franki Chan, decided to call it quits and retire the event series. In this first iteration of CYP they successfully brought artists like Justice, Matt & Kim, Diplo, The Horrors, Boys Noize, Simian Mobile Disco, Crystal Castles, The Kooks and many more to Los Angeles for the first time.
In 2010, IHEARTCOMIX collaborated with Topshelf Management (then Media Contender) to revive the Check Yo Ponytail brand as the sequel, Check Yo Ponytail 2. The resurrection took place at it’s last home, Echoplex, and was met with celebration and praise. The revival of CYP2 lasted a strong 3 years, and again, successfully introduced artists like Skrillex, Grimes, Com Truise, Trash Talk, DIIV, The Naked & Famous, A-Trak, Killer Mike, Blood Orange and so many more to Los Angeles. CYP2 even had the honor of hosting The Rolling Stones in 2012, in their first club appearance in over 18 years.
Of the qualities that make Check Yo Ponytail unique, it’s always been their sense of experimentation and ambitiousness in expanding the brand beyond the confines of ‘just a party’ that really make it stand out. CYP has grown beyond its home at the Echoplex through a series of specially branded events that include parties at SXSW, stage takeovers at Electric Forest, and the Check Yo Ponytail Tour, a mobile version of the show that takes the full Check Yo production on the road. The story behind the first CYP Tour in 2011, which featured Spank Rock, Big Freedia, The Death Set, Pictureplane, and Franki Chan, was attempted to become the focus of a feature length documentary titled, Get Amongst It, which endured an extensive Kickstarter campaign, yet never made it’s goal.
Despite not completing the goal for the Kickstarter, CYP has not been shy about expanding itself into other forms of media. CYP has produced an ongoing video series for Pitchfork TV as well as video specials for Myspace, SPIN and Thump. The experimentation into other forms of media even lead CYP to create their own TV variety show aptly titled The Check Yo Ponytail Show on YouTube.
The fall of 2014 Check Yo Ponytail Tour took place across the USA and Canada with The Presets, LE1F, Antwon, Chela, Saint Pepsi and Franki Chan and continues to pop up in Los Angeles. Keep an eye out as the CYP brand continues to grow and challenge the perceptions of what an event can be!
